Investigating Sodicity and Treatment Options in The Barossa Valley Viticulture Area In SA

Started in early 2002, this project is being managed by a steering group comprising representatives from the Barossa Valley Agricultural Bureau, Barossa Viticultural Technical Group, SARDI, Rural Solutions SA, DWLBC and Northern Adelaide and Barossa Catchment, Water Management Board.

Recent activity

The 18 sites on 12 properties in the Barossa Valley were resampled by soil layers in November 2005. A further 780 samples were collected for analysis. The second sampling is to measure the soil chemistry change as a result of the winter rainfall but prior to the irrigation season. The differences between the soils after irrigation compared to that following rainfall (better quality water) is a key part of the project. A presentation on the project was given to the Lower South East Soil Conservation Board and Grape growers at a forum in Padthway in October. The growers were interested in the project and its relevance to the South East and to gauge if further investigation is required in their district. The presentation and discussion was outside the objectives of the Barossa Project and so was supported by DWLBC.

Current activity

The soil samples from the November sampling are being prepared for chemical analysis. Samples are also being prepared to replace missing values from the previous data set where insufficient sample was available for analysis. The data from the first sampling is also being assessed to determine which sites need to be further analysed to account for site variation. Only one of three replicates was analysed initially in order to reduce the costs.

Imminent activity

Following the chemical analysis of the second sampling a report on each site can be prepared for discussion. The interpretation of the results will determine further direction of the project as to sites which will be suitable for treatments and the appropriate extension messages and programs which will be developed to meet the project objectives. The Nuriootpa Viticultural Centre has already been identified as a suitable treatment site due to the centres infrastructure and soil type. Discussions on the establishment of specialised injection equipment and support from Agribusiness is continuing to establish the site.
