Latest agricultural research on show for farmers

A new show is in town, but this time it is giving primary producers the chance to see the latest in cutting edge agricultural research.

In an open day arranged by the Advisory Board of Agriculture (ABA), the Waite Campus is throwing open its doors to farmers and people with an interest in agriculture on Tuesday 14 October.

ABA Chair, Mark Dennis says farmers will have the chance to see first hand research being carried out by scientists from the University of Adelaide and SARDI with partners from the CSIRO and the Australian Wine Research Institute.

“Expertise on virtually any agricultural problem will be on hand, including a huge variety of research on soil, land and water management, biotechnology, crop breeding, weed, pest and disease control and climate change issues,” he said.

The event will also enable researchers to talk to primary producers and share some of what they’ve learned by working on their own properties.

Mark Dennis says it’s all aimed at bringing together farmers and scientists to discuss the latest in agricultural research.

“We organise events like this with our Agricultural Bureau members in mind, but everyone with an interest in farming is welcome,” he said.

“The open day is not only a great chance for primary producers to discover the great work being done at the Waite – it’s also an opportunity to help shape its future direction.”

The open day begins at 1pm, with visits to various areas of research and finishing with a tour of the campus winery and a barbecue from 5pm.

To coincide with the open day, the Advisory Board of Agriculture’s Annual Awards and Presentation Dinner, the ‘Spirit of Excellence in Agriculture Awards’ will also take place from 7pm at the Hurley’s’s Arkaba.
