Advisory Board of Agriculture visits the Fleurieu
Farming on the Fleurieu will be put under the spotlight during this year’s Advisory Board of Agriculture (ABA) annual general meeting.
The board is the governing body of the Agricultural Bureau and provides advice on agricultural matters to the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Fisheries. It is also responsible for initiating training, information and research programs for the bureau and farmer groups.
The AGM will be held in Victor Harbor on Tuesday, 18 August 2009, with a tour of the district on the Monday.
The tour includes visits to Milang and the Lower Lakes, an alpaca stud, an organic avocado farm, a horseradish farm and Granite Island’s well-loved horse tram.
ABA Chairman Mark Dennis said he was looking forward to visiting the Fleurieu and seeing the breadth of the region’s farming operations.
“This will be a great opportunity for our members to exchange ideas, discuss farming practices and generally learn more about the latest agricultural and environmental developments in the area,” Mr Dennis said.
“We’ll also be using the visit to plan for the coming year and consider how we can best support bureau members and the minister.”
The annual ABA dinner will be held at the Hotel Victor on the Monday night following the tour and will feature guest speaker Amy Williams.
Ms Williams, who hails from a Parawa dairy farm and is a senior environmental consultant with Rural Solutions SA, will talk about farming on the Fleurieu as a way of life.
