Advisory Board of Agriculture Tours Upper South East
Drought and climate change will be hot topics at this year’s Advisory Board of Agriculture (ABA) Annual General Meeting.
Held in Bordertown from 4-5 August 2008, the AGM will include discussions on how the ABA can assist farmers adapt and cope with climate change and implement risk management strategies.
The Board is the governing body of the Agricultural Bureau and provides advice to the Minister for Agriculture Food and Fisheries on agricultural matters. It is also responsible for initiating training, information and research programs for the Bureau and farmer groups.
ABA Chairman Mark Dennis said he was looking forward to visiting the upper South East and seeing first hand some of the issues farmers in the region were currently facing.
“Our members will use this opportunity to exchange ideas, discuss farming practices and keep up to date with the latest agriculture developments in the upper South East,” Mr Dennis said.
“It will also enable us to make forward plans for the year ahead and think strategically in terms of providing the best support and advice possible to our members in light of current issues.”
The ABA will take the opportunity to tour the district on Monday 4 August from 9 am to 4 pm.
The tour will include visits to local oat processor, Blue Lake Milling; the Wolseley and Wirrega cropping regions and local onion producer Tony Rowett.
The annual ABA dinner will be held on Monday night at the Bordertown Football Clubrooms, and will feature special guest, Dr John Matthews from the University of Adelaide.
Dr Matthews, a Bordertown farmer and research fellow in Agriculture and Science will discuss his life experiences and thoughts about farming now and into the future.
